The vitality of thought is in adventure. Ideas won't keep. Something must be done about them. When the idea is new, its custodians have fervor, live for it, and if need be, die for it. -- Alfred North Whitehead

My first long bicycle ride was in Illinois when some buddies of mine and I took our sons on a 50 ride to Starved Rock park. Bob Stillwell and I lasted the whole trip. Tom Hepburn's sons rode back the next day!

The tread is picked up again in Washington where I have ridden with Wim Verhoef and Tom Wilson on a wide variety of long rides. One of the most beautiful was the trip across the North Cascades Highway and back. We, also, took our sons on a long ride from Edmonds to Victoria, B.C., to Bellingham and back to Edmonds (about 200 miles in 3 days).

I have ridden the Seattle to Portland bike ride (200 miles in 2 days) with various combinations of Wim, Tom, son Max, and others. The picture above is of me on one of the STPs. The 50+ club in Palo Alto provides me with many opportunities for rides around home.

My goal now is to ride across the country in 2000. Wim and I have been working up to this and have ridden from Chicago to Dayton and a loop in Florida.
